Motor Neurone Disease Support
Motor neurone disease, often shortened to MND, is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. These nerves control the muscles used for movement, speech, swallowing and breathing.
MND affects people differently, but symptoms usually become more difficult over time. Some people may first notice weakness in their hands, arms, legs or voice, while others may experience problems with speech, swallowing, mobility, muscle cramps or fatigue.
A diagnosis of MND can have a significant impact on everyday life. As needs change, practical support at home may help someone continue with daily routines, remain involved in decisions, and maintain as much independence and comfort as possible.
MND can affect many parts of daily life because it gradually weakens the muscles. This may make tasks such as walking, using stairs, getting dressed, preparing meals, eating, drinking or communicating more difficult.
Common symptoms or difficulties may include
Practical support
A Personal Assistant may be able to provide practical day-to-day support for someone living with MND, depending on their needs, preferences and the support agreed. This could include help with washing, dressing, meal preparation, light housework, shopping, attending appointments, collecting prescriptions, companionship, mobility support, or getting out into the community.
For someone with changing needs, it can be helpful to have support that is familiar, flexible and based around their normal routines. A PA may also work alongside advice from family members and health or social care professionals, while staying within the role and responsibilities agreed with the individual.
Anyone living with MND should also be supported by appropriate healthcare professionals, such as their GP, neurologist, specialist nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech and language therapist or dietitian where needed.
